The Calabash

The calabash is made from the soft skin of the calabash fruit which is part of the gourd family. They are used widely in African and Caribbean communities.  You will find plain gourds or see them highly decorated or even jewelled for special occasions where they are given as gifts.

The gourds are dried and hollowed out to make containers which have a number of uses, cups. bowls, utensils, and even musical instruments.  The beautiful sound of the Kora instrument which is basically a harp built around a large calabash cut in half and covered in cow or goat skin with two handles is distinct and forms a rich part of West African culture.

I have used my calabash for many years. It's especially used when I need to feel connected, rooted and spiritual.

My calabash is filled with ROOT2GINGER, water, ice and lime wedges
